Questions before you start
The exact answer often depends on your documents. These answers explain the general route and where a case review is needed.
Still not sure?
Most international cases need document review before the answer is clear.
FAQ
Can two foreigners get married in Portugal?
In many cases, yes. Portugal can be a route for international couples, including couples who are not resident in Portugal. The exact document route depends on citizenships, residence, marital status and the documents each country can issue.
Can same-sex couples get married in Portugal?
Yes. Portugal allows civil marriage between same-sex couples. Same Vibes specializes in helping international same-sex couples access the official marriage route in Portugal.
Is Same Vibes a wedding agency?
No. Same Vibes is a legal support service. We do not sell wedding packages, symbolic ceremonies, venues, flowers, decoration or event production. Our work is the official marriage process.
Do we need to live in Portugal?
Residence in Portugal is not the core requirement for the international marriage route we support. The important question is whether your documents and legal status allow the process to be filed and accepted.
Can we come to Portugal for just one appointment?
Our service is designed so that the legal preparation and filing happen before you travel, and your in-person step is the official registry appointment in Portugal.
Will we receive the marriage certificate on the same day?
After the marriage is registered, your Portuguese marriage certificate is issued and you leave officially married with your certificate. Apostille, certified translation or delivery may take additional time.
How long does the process take?
Timelines start from around 2 months once your documents are ready. Exact timing depends on citizenships, document availability, translations, legalisation requirements, registry capacity and any additional legal steps.
What documents do we need?
Common documents include passports, birth certificates, proof of matrimonial capacity or a suitable alternative, and documents proving the end of previous marriages if applicable. Translations, apostilles or legalisations may be required.
What if our country does not allow same-sex marriage?
This does not automatically make the Portuguese route impossible. Some countries do not issue standard marital capacity documents for same-sex marriage cases, so the route must be reviewed carefully.
What if one of us was previously married?
Previous marriages must be documented correctly. Depending on the case, this may involve divorce certificates, court decisions, death certificates or proof that civil status records have been updated.
Do we need witnesses?
Witness requirements and appointment details can depend on the registry and case. We will explain what applies to your appointment when the route is confirmed.
Do we need an interpreter?
If one or both partners do not understand Portuguese, an interpreter may be required for the official appointment.
Will our Portuguese marriage be recognized in our home country?
Your marriage is official under Portuguese law. Recognition abroad depends on the law of the country where you plan to use the certificate. Country-specific recognition may require local legal advice.
Can we get an apostille?
Yes. If you need an apostille for use abroad, it can be arranged separately after registration. Apostille and certified translation may take additional time.
Is the process confidential?
We treat your case confidentially and never publish names, photos, stories or case details without explicit consent. If privacy is sensitive, tell us at the beginning.
Why Portugal instead of Denmark?
Denmark is known for speed and may be better if speed is your only criterion. Portugal’s strength is an official European route with local legal handling, one registry appointment, a same-day certificate after registration and a calmer human setting.
Why Portugal instead of Mexico?
Mexico can be a real option, but practical requirements vary by location and it is not an EU jurisdiction. Portugal may be better if you want a European certificate and Portugal-based legal handling.
Can we use Same Vibes if we also want a private dinner or photographer?
Yes, but that is not our service. We can recommend trusted local partners if you want something private after registration. Same Vibes itself handles the legal route.
Is the €1,800 fee all-inclusive?
No. The service fee starts from €1,800. Official fees, translations, apostilles, legalisations, courier costs, interpreter fees and additional legal steps are charged separately.
How do we start?
Start by sending your case details through the Check Your Case form. We need both partners’ citizenships, residence countries, marital status, previous marriage history and document situation.
